‘Impulse’ Cast Talks Season 2 Renewal, New Character Developments

The cast of YouTube’s “Impulse” just found out that the sci-fi drama has been officially renewed for a second season, and they’re already starting to ponder what’s in store for their characters — particularly for Maddie Hasson’s Henry and her newfound ability to teleport.

“I want to see what happens when Henry’s power develops because we sort of see it — especially in episode 10 — develop in a big way and grow in a big way,” Hasson said at Variety‘s San Diego Comic-Con Studio Thursday. “I want to see how she handles that because I’ve always expected her to handle it really badly and not be a superhero at all, and that would be fun for me to play.”

Executive producer Lauren LeFranc has yet to finalize or share any script drafts — even with the cast — but she did confirm that Henry’s supernatural ability will take center stage in the show’s sophomore season.

“We have 10 episodes, which was awesome, but it is hard to really go there, so I’m excited to have 10 more episodes to tell more of those stories,” LeFranc said. “I think teleportation is going to play a more complicated, bigger role in the mythology.”

Enuka Okuma, who plays Deputy Anna Hulce, is excited to delve deeper into Anna’s mysterious past and her overall purpose in the series’ small town.

“We just teased a little bit of Anna’s backstory in Season 1, so it’s a bit of a mystery why she’s in Reston and what happened back there in New York that sent her over to this small town where these lovely ladies live,” Okuma said, referring to castmates Hasson and Sarah Desjardins. “I’m curious to find out about her family. These characters are all complex — we’re not all good; we’re not all bad. So what are those colors within Anna’s life? I’m so curious.”

‘Impulse’ Renewed for Second Season at YouTube

The Doug Liman-produced series stars Maddie Hasson as a rebellious teen with a mysterious power.

YouTube wants more of Doug Liman’s Impulse.

The streamer has renewed the drama for a second season, it revealed on stage at Comic-Con on Thursday afternoon.

The series, which stars Maddie Hasson as rebellious teen Henry Cole who has a mysterious power, will return to YouTube’s subscription video service, Premium, with 10 new episodes in 2019. YouTube says that the pilot of the show, which is available for free on the service, has received 8 million views since its June 6 debut. YouTube does not reveal viewership numbers outside of the publicly available stats for its free episodes.

Impulse, which hails from Liman’s Hypnotic and Universal Cable Productions, is based on the Jumper universe novel by Steven Gould. The novel Jumper was the basis for Liman’s film of the same name. With Impulse he returned to the world as director and executive producer. David Bartis and Gene Klein also serve as executive producers for UCP. Lauren LeFrank is the showrunner and executive producer.

Joining Hasson to return for a second season are Impulse stars Missi Pyle, Sarah Desjardins, Enuka Okuma and Craig Arnold.

“This dramatic thriller has all of the right elements — with unexplained events and complex characters who drew us into their mysterious world right from the start,” said YouTube head of original content Susanne Daniels. “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Universal Cable Productions and the talented team at Hypnotic to create another intriguing season.”

Impulse was one of the first hourlong projects to come to YouTube Premium (previously YouTube Red). It is part of a growing slate of projects commissioned under Daniels that seek to bring a broader audience to the service, in addition to the young viewers who come for videos of their favorite YouTubers. Other YouTube Premium shows include Karate Kid spinoff Cobra Kai and Step Up: High Water. In the works are Jordan Peele-produced anthology Weird City, space-set Origin and a The Edge of Seventeen spinoff.
